KantanMT sees 180% growth in participation of its global academic program for teaching language technology to future language professionals
23 March 2016, Dublin, Ireland: KantanMT University Partner Program sees a 180% growth rate since the program commencement in 2013. The program has now successfully grown to include both postgraduate and undergraduate students from 13 partner academic institutions globally. The purpose of the program is to facilitate the training and education of future language professionals in order to equip them with cutting edge language technology skills they will need for a career in the industry.
Access to KantanMT has enabled students to expand and develop their skill set to include a theoretical understanding and knowledge of sophisticated Statistical Machine Translation technology. KantanMT is a cloud based Custom Machine Translation platform, which provides students with the opportunity to take a deep dive into SMT and cloud computing while experimenting with unique customisation techniques. This learning process motivates the students to take a more hands on and interactive approach to learning.
“Our students continue to have a very good experience with KantanMT, now completing their second and third mini-assignments in MT. They are actively collaborating and sharing with each other on MT engine construction and tuning, as undergraduates!” Says Dr Pete Smith, Chief Analytics Officer at University of Texas at Arlington. “As a teaching team, we are across-the-board impressed by the system and its role in the education of these language students.”
These sentiments are echoed by the students using the system as they provide the KantanMT Team with feedback on the platform and their experience using Machine Translation. KantanMT uses student feedback to simplify and improve the platform ensuring a smooth user experience for its community.
In addition to valuable feedback for KantanMT’s development team, students recognise that their success in the industry requires knowledge of language technology tools available in the market, a Master’s student at the University College London with an interest in commercial translation commented, “I chose this course because I wanted to get in touch with the latest trends in the translation industry, and to obtain better understanding of the application of translation technology.” The student found the course “relevant to both my learning experience and my future prospect as a professional translator.” Read more student feedback here.
Academic institutions can access the KantanMT platform free of charge for teaching and students can access a wide range of features on the platform that will help prepare them for future careers in the industry. Not only is KantanMT used as a stand-alone tool for learning, many of the universities use the platform to teach students how to leverage KantanMT when it is integrated with leading CAT (Computer Aided Translation) tools, such as SDL Trados, memoQ, Memsource, Alchemy CATALYST or XTM cloud.
“After three years successfully running the academic program, we are noticing a trend where the number of students enrolling in language technology courses is growing steadily year on year,” says Tony O’Dowd, Founder and Chief Architect of KantanMT.com. “These figures substantiate consensus that language technology is playing a greater role within the language industry.
