KantanMT Welcomes the Middlebury Institute of International Studies to its Academic Programme

KantanMT is pleased to announce a new academic partnership with the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. The new partnership allows students in the course TRLM 8616 – Advanced CAT to learn fundamental skills in building, managing and customising highly scalable, cloud-based Machine Translation systems for English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Chinese (ZH-CN and ZH-TW), Korean, Japanese and Russian languages.

The course, TRLM 8616 – Advanced CAT (Computer Aided Translation) begins in early February through May and will be led by Assistant Professor, Adam Wooten and Assistant Professor Max Troyer, the Program’s Coordinator. As part of their studies, approximately one hundred students in three groups will gain access to both KantanMT and KantanLQR™, a new online language quality review tool for evaluating the language quality of machine translation output.

“No localization training program is complete without the latest in machine translation technology, and the Translation and Localization Management program at MIIS is no exception,” says Max Troyer, TLM Program Coordinator and Assistant Professor. “The partnership between KantanMT and MIIS TLM ensures our curriculum will include the latest developments in the translation technology industry.”

Students will gain valuable knowledge and expertise in the evaluation and customisation of KantanMT Statistical Machine Translation (SMT) engines in a number of language pairs including, English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Chinese (ZH-CN and ZH-TW), Korean, Japanese and Russian languages.

“With rapidly advancing translation technologies and increasingly more use cases for machine translation, our graduates must understand not only how to train and customise a machine translation engine, but also why they are doing it the way they do,” according to Adam Wooten, TLM Assistant Professor. “In our translation technology courses at MIIS, students learn why they use the technology a certain way so they can make better decisions even as new technologies and uses continue to evolve. For this reason, we appreciate that KantanMT not only provides students with access to its technology but also publishes resources and insights that explain the reasons their technology was engineered to work the way it does.”

MIIS Institute is an academic community committed to preparing innovative professionals to provide leadership in cross-cultural, multilingual environments.

KantanMT.com is fully integrated into the university’s translation technology module and covers principles and practice in Translation Memory (TM) and Machine Translation (MT) technology. The unique customisation features of KantanMT enables students to gain a thorough understanding of MT, which will help prepare them for future careers in the industry.
